The following are some of the the spheres of influence which a character might have access to. This is generally represented by the Status merit, but influence can also be represented by other social merits, as described by the individual sphere. Individual social merits can be taken to represent groups or individuals not named below. This page is an attempt to provide a basis and a starting point, not to limit players.

Academia

Academia is the influence sphere which represents higher learning and scholarly pursuits in and around Reno. From the University of Nevada to the Truckee Meadows Community College, this influence sphere covers teachers, administrators, and students, as well as associated researchers and support staff.

Arts

Artists, museum and gallery owners, and style-makers in and around Reno.

City Hall

City Hall is the Influence Sphere which concerns the Executive and Legislative government of Reno. Influence here can be used to push city zoning, influence trash collection, get the Mayor's ear, and so on.

Corporate

Corporate Influence is directly tied to big business, from regional chains to multinational conglomerates. This sphere provides access to accountants, advertisers, executives and various movers and shakers at multiple businesses.

Courts

Court Influence provides access to the judicial system in Reno, from prosecutors, public defenders, private attorneys, and judges to simple law clerks and paralegals. From information on case dispositions to scheduling and even influence on the outcome of trials, this is where the fate of criminal and civil matters get decided.

Culture

Historical societies, local festival organizers, supporters of local traditions, folklorists, and urban legends in their own minds.

The Entertainment sphere covers most forms of popular art and media, from music and film to literature and television.

High Society

High Society Influence is standing with and access to the rich and the glamorous. This type of influence is social and not tied to any particular field or business; those are other types of influence. Instead of business or government access, this influence sphere relates to social standing and gossip.

Homeless

The Homeless are both everywhere and nowhere, an ignored fixture of the landscape. This leaves them as a constant source of information to those who can deal with them. Due to a general lack of hierarchy and organization, Status is not a valid merit for Homeless.

Internet

Internet influence represents social standing within online communities. It allows you to gauge public opinion, gain information (if potentially dubious), or reach an audience of loyal followers. This is not a replacement for hacking ability (Computer skill) or a replacement for influence with more specific spheres.

Law Enforcement

Law enforcement represents influence with local law enforcement, primarily the Reno Police Department, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, and their associated support bodies. This can be used to gain privileged information, gain access to evidence, order nuisance arrests, or at higher levels, make bodies or evidence disappear.

Media

Despite some overlap, the Media influence sphere is distinct from Entertainment in function, if not form. Media represents the news: television journalists, TV weathermen, political bloggers, and newspaper editors. They can get information on many topics and can apply or ease pressure.

Medicine

Influence in Medicine applies to local hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services. It can get someone treatment or get them denied. It can also get access to medical records or experimental drugs.

Nightlife

The Nightlife influence sphere is where the fun is: all the best parties, clubs, raves, concerts, and hot spots. You may be on VIP lists, may know the best dealers, or be able to get invites to the most exclusive parties. There is no associated Status for this influence sphere, but the Barfly merit is highly recommended.

Occult

This sphere represents the occultists of Reno, from fortune tellers to mediums to owners of occult supply stores. The degree of "true" occult knowledge for those within this sphere varies widely, but more discerning characters can generally gain access to genuine occultists rather than charlatans or those operating on urban legend. As local occultists (at least those not already within other influence spheres) tend to operate alone and have widely varying beliefs, Status is not available for this sphere.

Organized Crime

Organized Crime in Reno is primarily controlled by the La Cosa Nostra, more commonly known as Italian Mob. The occasional out-of-town player may come by to make a deal or be entertained by the casinos, but Reno is a town belonging to the Italian mafia.

Religion

Religion deals specifically with the communities which form around religious worship, regardless of particular faith or creed. Those within this sphere are both the faithful who engage with their religious community and the clergy who lead them.

Science

This sphere includes those active within the formal scientific community, from students of the sciences to thought leaders in their field. Influence here can gain one access to in-progress or unpublished studies, allow access to state-of-the-art laboratories or research facilities, or arrange consultations with subject matter experts.

Spirits

This is a home-grown system that deals specifically with the Spirits of Reno and the surrounding areas. It is limited to Allies and Contacts - Status is not an allowed stat for this sphere. Prerequisites and system information for Allies (Spirits) and Contacts (Spirits) can be found here.

Sports

This sphere deals with professional sports of every kind, and it includes athletes, agents, coaches, and others directly involved in the commission of game-playing (those covering sports are part of the Media sphere). Influence allows access to the training facilities typically afforded to professional athletes, and at higher levels, a bully pulpit of adoring fans. Reno is not home to any local teams in the big leagues, though. Its largest teams are the Reno Aces (a AAA baseball team associated with the Arizona Diamondbacks), the Reno Bighorns (a basketball development team associated with the Sacramento Kings and Orlando Magic), the Reno Astros (an independent semi-pro baseball team), and the UNR Wolf Pack (any of many teams associated with UNR's athletics program). Reno also features some major golf tournaments, including the Reno-Tahoe Open, part of the PGA tour.

Street Crime

Street Crime in Reno is broken into dozens of gangs, from branches of national and international gangs to local neighborhood toughs. Influence here can keep you informed of the latest changes in turf ownership. It also offers connections for acquiring low-level illegal items, primarily drugs and guns.

Technology

Technology represents access to the tech industry and the social links therein. This sphere includes people like programmers, engineers, applied scientists, and tech visionaries. Influence within this sphere gives one access to the industry's manpower and expertise.

Travel

This sphere contains everyone who moves things, whether people or goods, for a living. This includes cab drivers, truckers, travel agents, and airline employees or pilots working out of Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Because those contained here tend to operate within disparate industries with disparate interests, there is no Status for this sphere.
